In memoriam Marcello Malentacchi

Marcello Malentacchi, General Secretary from 1989 to 2009 of the International Metalworkers’ Federation, a founding organization of IndustriALL Global Union, died on 24 May 2013 at the age of 66. He died of natural causes while cycling, one of his many passions in life, near to his birthplace in Tuscany, Italy.

Hunger strike launched at PKC in Mexico

Eleven members of the Mexican national union of mineworkers, Los Mineros, sacked by Finnish-based PKC before Christmas started a hunger strike on 8 January in protest of the union-busting.

Union recognized at Standard Profil in Turkey

IndustriALL’s affiliate Petrol-İş gained legal recognition as the union representing workers at Standard Profil in Turkey at the end of December 2012 and has commenced collective negotiations after a four-year organizing campaign.

Hyundai stops night shifts in Korea

Hyundai workers began a new shift system on 8 January 2013 no longer working overnight for the first time since 1967 thanks to the IndustriALL-affiliated Korean Metal Workers’ Union’s agreement with the company.

Indonesian Bridgestone workers win permanent employment

On 28 December 2012, 997 temporary workers employed at two Bridgestone Tyre plants in Karawang and Bekasi, Indonesia gained permanent employment.

Colombian union USO reaches agreement

The violent 4-month labour conflict between Unión Sindical Obrera de la Industria Petróleo (USO) and oil field services contractor Termotécnica ended in agreement on 22 December 2012.

Union under attack at Bashneft in Russia

Bashneft management is striving to wipe out locals of the Russian Chemical and Allied Workers Union (RCWU) at its plants and replace them with so-called Labour Councils, company-controlled bodies. IndustriALL-affiliated RCWU is fighting back with a national campaign of protest.
