T he Executive Committee of the 20-million-member International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) vowed to do more in the fight against the deadly HIV/AIDS virus in developing countries.

With only one in five people at risk of the HIV infection currently having access to adequate treatment programs, the ICEM's Executive Committee intends to intensify its effort to ensure the availability of HIV/AIDS drug treatment.

In a strong resolution passed on 23 May 2003, the Executive meeting in Brussels reaffirmed its commitment to gain access to high quality drugs for all those living with HIV/AIDS in countries without the financial means to provide such drugs.

The ICEM will "campaign with International Trade Union Organizations, the United Nations and other concerned institutions, to ensure the appropriate drugs treatments reach those living with HIV/AIDS in developing nations."

ICEM General Secretary Fred Higgs said, "The ICEM represents pharmaceutical workers and workers in industries with high risk of infection by HIV/AIDS across the world, thus we're in the unique position of playing a key role in achieving meaningful initiatives with the pharmaceutial industry to deliver drugs to those that need them most."
