21 June, 1999At the IMF Executive Committee meeting, taking place today in Helsinki, the IMF General Secretary predicted closer trade union cooperation, including collective bargaining.

HELSINKI: IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi began his remarks today (June 22) to the Executive Committee by expressing his warm congratulations to the Finnish Metalworkers´ Union on its 100th anniversary.
Malentacchi went on to speak about the Euro, which will be the main theme for the Central Committee meeting the following two days. A recent survey of senior executives across Europe revealed that the Euro is pushing companies to consider alliances, mergers and acquisitions in order to cope with the increase in competition that the Euro will bring.
Most CEOs agreed that the Euro would be good for economic growth, but they were less optimistic about its effect on employment.
The consequences of the introduction of the Euro will be significant, Malentacchi predicted. "We will see much closer cooperation between our IMF unions in the near future, up to and including international collective bargaining."
