GENEVA/HELSINKI: The main theme for this year's Central Committee meeting of the International Metalworkers' Federation, being held on June 23-24 in Helsinki, is "The Euro -- Impact on the Global Economy, Industry and Metalworkers." Debate on this topic, on Thursday, June 24, will be kicked off by a panel discussion, followed by participation from the floor.
Per-Erik Lundh, President of the Finnish Metalworkers' Union, will make introductory remarks on the challenges and opportunities of the Euro, and John Schmid, Frankfurt correspondent for the International Herald Tribune, will moderate the debate.
Presentations concerning the regional and global implications of the Euro will then be made by three panel speakers: Carlos Eduardo Carvalho, Professor of Economics at the Catholic University of Sao Paulo, Brazil; Jeff Faux, President of the Economic Policy institute, Washington, D.C., USA; and Ludwig Schubert, Deputy Director General, European Commission, for Economy and Finance.
The Central Committee, which meets in Helsinki shortly before Finland takes over the presidency of the European Union, in July, will also be addressed by the Finnish Minister of Labour, Ms Sinikka Mönkäre.
