15 June, 1999Tomorrow, the European Metalworkers' Federation, the EMF, will elect a new General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary.

The first EMF Congress to be held in Copenhagen will take place on June 17-18. The theme for the Congress is "A New Deal for Europe -- Heading into the Future". The EMF intends to clearly emphasise the need to consolidate the social dimension of Europe and to achieve more effective political and democratic structures for the European Union, as well as the need for reform of European trade union structures.
A record number of candidates are standing for election to the posts of EMF General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary. There are two candidates running for General Secretary: Tony Ferrigo (FIM/CISL), nominated by the three Italian unions, and Reinhard Kuhlmann, the current Assistant General Secretary, nominated by the British Section of the EMF.
The candidates for the post of Assistant General Secretary are Jan Wijkstra, nominated by the FNV (Netherlands), Bart Samyn, nominated by the CMB (Belgium), and Barbara Gerstenberger, nominated by the VASAS (Hungary).
Tony Jensen is standing for re-election as President, nominated by his union, the CCMB (Belgium), and supported by CO-industri (Denmark). The former General Secretary, Hans Fluger, left the EMF in February this year.
The EMF is made up of 56 European metalworkers' unions representing over 5.5 million members.
