IndustriALL General Secretary Jyrki Raina visited Moscow, Russia, on 2-7 October, to attend a series of meetings with trade union leaders from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other CIS countries.

During his first visit to Russia since the creation of IndustriALL Global Union in June 2012, Raina met with the leaders of the affiliated unions from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

On 4 October a general meeting took place. The participants discussed the economic state of their respective countries, problems of cooperation and administrative matters. There was a lively discussion on the way regional work will be organized.

During the next day Jyrki Raina met with some union leaders individually. He also paid a visit to the headquarters of the Mining and Metallurgical Workers’ Union (MMWU) on 3 October.

Another highlight of Raina’s visit to Russia was signing of global framework agreement with Lukoil, an oil and gas company based in Moscow. The agreement covers numerous points on human and trade union rights, health, safety, and environment. Read more: http://www.industriall-union.org/industriall-renews-gfa-with-lukoi.

IndustriALL has an office for CIS countries in Moscow, coordinating work with 50 affiliates in various sectors. Jyrki Raina’s visit to Moscow was an important step in fostering cooperation between the unions in the region. CIS unions encounter the same problems as unions in other countries confronting global capital: precarious work, outsourcing, and international reach of global companies. That’s why union leaders from CIS countries enthusiastically endorse the project of IndustriALL, the biggest and strongest global voice of workers by far.
