South African mineworkers’ union launches campaign against gender-based violence

22 November, 2018When launching 16 days of activism against the abuse of women and children, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) remembered Nombuso Dube, a KwaZulu Natal provincial treasurer of the union’s women structure, and her mother, Mthokozile Dube, who were shot dead in October.

15 November, 2018Thembisile Lucia Yende, who worked for power utility Eskom, was murdered at work at a substation near Springs in 2017, and the main suspect was arrested but later released. The case has been provisionally withdrawn until more evidence is available.

Victory as the Philippines passes expanded maternity leave law

2 October, 2018Approved in the bicameral committee conference on 1 October, the Philippines are now moving towards 15 weeks paid maternity leave. The law, known as the 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law of 2018, increases the current paid maternity leave from 60 or 78 to 105 days. Yet to be signed by the President, the bill is the result of an intense campaign led mostly by IndustriALL affiliated unions and partners.
