The Nordic model under attack in Finland

5 July, 2023Following the elections in April this year, conservative leader Petteri Orpo has formed a new right-wing coalition government, including the far-right populist True Finns party. The new government has outlined a plan that runs completely counter to the objectives of the trade union movement. If implemented, it will take Finland further away from the consensus-based social policies of the other Nordic countries.

Stora Enso GFA committee plans sustainable future

5 June, 2019Following the signing in January 2018 of the Global Framework Agreement (GFA) between Finnish-headquartered renewable materials multinational Stora Enso, IndustriALL, BWI and UNI global unions, the social partners held the first biennial meeting of the agreement’s Implementation and Review Committee, in Helsinki on 3 June.

Finnish paper strike solid as UPM refuses to negotiate

27 January, 2022The bitter dispute at the Finnish forestry, pulp and paper company UPM threatens to drag on as the strike, which began on 1 January, has been extended until 19 February. 2,200 workers at all UPM business units are on strike, with dockers and railway workers showing solidarity by refusing to handle the company’s goods.

Global unions warn UPM shareholders of investment risk

Hunger strike launched at PKC in Mexico

10 January, 2013Eleven members of the Mexican national union of mineworkers, Los Mineros, sacked by Finnish-based PKC before Christmas started a hunger strike on 8 January in protest of the union-busting.
