South Africa: Union condemns retrenchment of 1,722 mineworkers at Evander gold mine

16 May, 2018Pan African Resources’ Evander gold mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga Province, has given notice to retrench 95 per cent of its workers – 1722 workers out of 1812 – by the end of May. IndustriALL affiliate the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is asking that the Department of Mineral Resources intervene to save the jobs, even if it means that the government revokes the mining licence.

South Africa: Four dead as mine claims more lives

4 May, 2018Four workers have died and three are trapped underground as rescue efforts continue at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Masakhane Shaft in Westonaria, Johannesburg, which has been closed. This follows seismic incident causing a fall ground on 3 May that saw 13 mineworkers trapped underground. Six have since been rescued and are recovering in hospital.

South African mines claim more lives

27 March, 2018Since January this year, 17 workers have been killed in South African mines. Last week a worker died from an accident at a Sibanye Stillwater operation which mines platinum in Rustenburg while another died at De Beers Venetia diamond mine in Limpopo early this week. 

Scrap labour law amendment bills, say unions in South Africa

23 March, 2018In a carnival-like atmosphere IndustriALL Global Union affiliate, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) took to the streets of Johannesburg protesting proposed amendments to the labour laws, which the union says will reverse the hard-won gains on workers’ rights. NUMSA has called for a general strike on April 25 to defend the right to strike.

South Africa: Metalworkers' fight against precarious work goes to the Constitutional Court

27 February, 2018On 22 February, hundreds of members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), with support from the Casual Workers Advice Office, picketed outside the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg to defend the rights of temporary and contract workers against working under harsh precarious conditions of labour brokers. Singing and dancing outside the courts, the workers denounced the labour brokers.
