The Mineworkers Union of Namibia has negotiated favourable retrenchment packages for 276 workers at Rio Tinto’s Rossing Mine. The mine has been experiencing losses for some time affected by lower demand and prices for uranium.

Rio Tinto has agreed to resume negotiations with IndustriALL Global Union affiliate, the Australian Workers Union (AWU), after Fair Work Australia agreed that the majority of the workers at Bell Bay wanted to collectively bargain for pay and conditions.

Mining giant Rio Tinto is showing its anti-union character once again. In closing its Australian Blair Athol mine the company is paying lower redundancy packages to CFMEU union members than to other workers.

About 500 protestors from communities affected by platinum mining in Limpopo, South Africa marched to Anglo Platinum's Mogalakwena Mine on 28 September to hand over demands to the company as well as to Platreef Resources, that sent a representative to receive memoranda.
