Approved in the bicameral committee conference on 1 October, the Philippines are now moving towards 15 weeks paid maternity leave. The law, known as the 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law of 2018, increases the current paid maternity leave from 60 or 78 to 105 days. Yet to be signed by the President, the bill is the result of an intense campaign led mostly by IndustriALL affiliated unions and partners.

Fifty trade union leaders from the ‘macro sector’ of manufacturing industries across Latin American and the Caribbean met for the first time from 13 to 15 August in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Their aim was to discuss the future world of work and come up with joint initiatives.

In May last year, power utility Eskom worker, 29-year-old Thembisile Yende, was murdered whilst at work at an electricity sub-station in Ekurhuleni near Johannesburg. On 28 June, the court said that the director of public prosecutions has provisionally withdrawn the charges against her alleged killer, David Ngwenya, a technician at Eskom.

IndustriALL Global Union’s campaign to end violence in the workplace has been embraced by affiliates all over the world since it launched in November 2017. More than 55 unions from from the USA to Turkey, and South Africa to the Philippines have taken IndustriALL’s pledge to end violence against women, recognizing their role in preventing abuse in the workplace and in unions.

The annual International Labour Conference (ILC) started in Geneva on 28 May, where Director-General Guy Ryder opened the conference calling for strong action to end violence and harassment at the workplace. Delegates from governments, workers and employers from the 187 ILO Member states came together to negotiate the nature and the scope of a future instrument on violence and harassment at work.

Elected in May last year, Marie Nilsson is president of Swedish industrial workers’ union IF Metall, a union with a predominately male membership. In October 2017, the #MeToo movement, highlighting sexual harassment against women, started to gain momentum, and the response in Sweden was huge, with some analysts comparing the movement to when women acheived the right to vote.

During a campaign for maternity protection in Nigeria, Oluchi Okorie, from IndustriALL Global Union affiliate, the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers union, was asked by employers: “What is your problem? Are you pregnant?” Similar questions, that made fun of organizers, were common to those championing women workers’ rights at the workplace. They were also even ignored when they tried to speak in meetings at work.

Recent social media campaigns like #Metoo and #Timesup have highlighted gender-based violence at work and shown the extent of the problem. Trade unions need to take action on violence against women and advocate for a binding international law on gender-based violence.
