Recent social media campaigns like #Metoo and #Timesup have highlighted gender-based violence at work and shown the extent of the problem. Trade unions need to take action on violence against women and advocate for a binding international law on gender-based violence.

The Executive Committee, meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 8 and 9 November, endorsed campaigns against Glencore, Shell, violence against women, and in support of workers fired for striking at the Grasberg mine in Indonesia.

Violence against women in the workplace was a key topic when the IndustriALL Women Committee met in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 7 November. The Committee reinforced its support for a campaign to fight against violence and harassment against women in the workplace.

Eight people on hunger strike in Mauritius shone a light on the starvation wages earned by cleaners of public schools in the country. Backed by massive local and international support, the union has managed to secure permanent employment for the workers in question.

Following debates about the urgent need to increase women’s representation in unions during the IndustriALL Women’s Committee in Geneva in April, a workshop was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Women organizers and gender directors exchanged experiences and strategies to increase women’s representation and power in union structures.

At an IndustriALL AngloGold Ashanti Global Network meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 5 May, affiliates from Argentina, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ghana, Guinea, South Africa and Tanzania agreed to intensify their campaign against rape, murder and sexual harassment of women mine workers.
