Paper and packaging workers on picket line for 137 days

24 October, 2023Workers at the paper and packaging company WestRock, New Jersey, USA, have been on strike for 137 days. Members represented by United Auto Workers Union (UAW) Region 9 have been on the picket line, fighting against the company’s demand that workers leave the union insurance plan and go into the company plan, which would mean a cut to their benefits.

Unions protest police brutality against trade unionists in Nigeria

16 November, 2023On 1 November, Joe Ajaero, Nigeria Labour Congress president, who is also the general secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, affiliated to IndustriALL, went to Imo State to meet workers and plan protests to curb wage theft after some workers have not been paid their wages for more than 20 months. During the meeting he was arrested by heavily armed police and taken into custody where he was blindfolded and beaten up.

Shipbreaking unions plan for entry into force of Hong Kong Convention

27 November, 2023South Asian shipbreaking unions met in Kathmandu, Nepal, on 24-25 November, to evaluate a three-year organizing project supported by FNV Mondiaal, which ends this year. The industry is going through tremendous change as it prepares for the entry into force of the Hong Kong Convention (HKC).

Pakistan ratifies the Hong Kong Convention

6 December, 2023Pakistan becomes the 23rd country to ratify the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. The Convention is set to come into force in June 2025.
