Top Nigerian union leader faces terrorism charges

26 August, 2024On 19 August the Nigerian police in Abuja wrote a letter to the president of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, asking him to report to the police the following day to answer charges of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

Armed forces raid Nigerian union offices amid protests

8 August, 2024On the night of 7 August, armed security forces broke into the offices of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja, seizing printed materials and other documents. The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) claims these materials were “seditious and used to incite and organize” recent protests advocating for pro-poor economic policies.

Nigerian unions and federal government agree on new minimum wage

25 July, 2024Trade union federations in Nigeria, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) signed a new minimum wage agreement of 70 000 Naira ($43) with the Federal Government of Nigeria on 18 July which will be reviewed after three years.

5 June, 2024After calling for an indefinite strike over national minimum wages, and the reversal of electricity tariff increases, trade union federations, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), suspended the strike on 4 June to allow for negotiations with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Unions protest police brutality against trade unionists in Nigeria

16 November, 2023On 1 November, Joe Ajaero, Nigeria Labour Congress president, who is also the general secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, affiliated to IndustriALL, went to Imo State to meet workers and plan protests to curb wage theft after some workers have not been paid their wages for more than 20 months. During the meeting he was arrested by heavily armed police and taken into custody where he was blindfolded and beaten up.
