19 July, 1999For the first time the International Labour Organisation, ILO, is announcing a meeting far in advance on its website.

GENEVA: On 8-12 May 2000, the ILO will arrange a tripartite meeting in Geneva on the social and labour impact of globalisation in the manufacture of transport equipment. The purpose will be to focus attention on developments in the rapidly changing world of transportation equipment manufacturing. The emphasis will be on conditions of work and life, employment, industrial relations and revised needs in light of the new skills required by flexible production systems.
There will be 54 official delegates. The participants will represent the governments, employers and workers from the world of transport equipment manufacturing. The International Metalworkers Federation, IMF, will arrange the workers delegation for participating in this meeting.
Three informal panel discussions will be held during the meeting. As the topics of these round tables will be finalised closer to the meeting, the ILO asks for proposals for possible topics and participants.
A background report will be available in march 2000.
IMF General Secretary, Marcello Malentacchi, says in a comment that the ILO sectoral meetings are of great importance to trade unions, and the subject of globalisation is certainly one of our chief concerns. "In view of past efforts by certain employer organisations to eliminate references to trade unions, we insist that the role and proposals of trade unions must be fully reflected in the documents prepared by the ILO as well as in the meetings conclusions and resolutions. We will continue to raise this issue at the highest levels of the ILO."
