18 July, 1999After 18 days of picketing, the 300 Malaysian workers are allowed to work in a sitting position.

MALAYSIA: The dispute on the new working system at Sanyo Electric (Penang) has been settled. The company has withdrawn its work system, whereby the workers were forced to work in a standing position for 8 hours and 45 minutes a day.
300 workers had been picketing since June 23 due to the new work system. Their trade union, the Electrical Industry Workers' Union (EIWU), complained to the Department of Safety and Health.
The settlement was reached by the intervention of the Industrial Relations Department, Ministry of Manpower. The workers can now do their work in a sitting position, a major success to the EIWU.
