11 July, 1999Trade union accuses Samsung for harassing Malaysian workers.

MALAYSIA: The Korean based company Samsung Electronics plant in Malaysia was organised by the Electrical Industri Workers' Union (EIWU) on June 14, 1999. A strong majority of the workers applied to join the union.
However, immediately after the union filed the claim for recognition, the workers made complaints to the union that they were being harassed and threatened by some managers. The company forced the workers to resign from the union and rejected the claim for recognition.
The union warned the company that it would take legal action and has referred the dispute to the Ministry of Human Resources. The International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) is monitoring the whole process and is ready to take strong action if necessary.
IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi says that Samsung is harassing the workers in Malaysia, among them many women, just as it is doing in South Korea.
He expects the Malaysian Government to grant recognition to the union, the EIWU, and disregard Samsung's claim.
