25 July, 1999Workers at Avondale Shipyard build union, despite court ruling.

USA: Workers at the troubled Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans vow that "the union is here, and here to stay," despite a shocking appeals court verdict setting aside the 1993 election. The court ruled the NLRB procedures were flawed--procedures the labour board has used for the past 60 years. "We voted to form our union to get justice, dignity and safety on the job, and we will fight until we win," a shipyard worker pledged.
"Avondale remains an outlaw company with a record of repeat offences of labour law and OSHA regulations," explains John Meese, who heads the AFL-CIO Metal Trades Department. While lawyers weigh options for the legal campaign, Meese said the federation will continue its support for the Avondale workers and their efforts to build a stronger union at the troubled shipyard.
