Union leader released

26 July, 1999The President of the Korean Metal Workers' Federation (KMWF) was arrested and put in prison on July 3. On July 23 he was released.

KOREA, REP: The General Secretary of the International Metalworkers Federation (IMF), Marcello Malentacchi, has received the following letter from Mun, Sung-hyun, President of the KMWF:
"I am writing this letter to express my gratitude for your showing international solidarity by sending protest letter of my releasing to President Kim, Dae-jung. On the 23rd of July I was released from Seoul prison since Korean Prosecutor dropped a legal suit. It is not only KMWF workers' protest against the government's unjust arrest of workers but also your written protest for imprisoned unionists. many unionists are still imprisoned and the former president, Dan, Byung-ho is in prison now. Therefore, I will continue our campaign until the Kim, Dae-jung Government releases all workers imprisoned."
Many IMF affiliates have written protest letters to the Korean Government, following the request on this website on July 13 ("Kim Dae-jung breached promise to unionists.") The KMWF President says that he has experienced how important the international solidarity is and expresses his appreciation to the IMF and its affiliates.
