15 July, 1999The situation in the Czech Republic is getting worse, according to a union leader.

CZECH REPUBLIC: The Metalworkers' Federation in the Czech Republic, known as OS KOVO, organised a special meeting on 8 July 1999, to discuss the critical situation metalworkers are presently in. There were participants representing 163.632 employees from 146 companies.
The reason for the meeting was to discuss the critical situation employees are faced with in the metalworking industry. Wages were not paid to 41.335 employees, in the first half of this year alone. They expect that the situation will be even worse in the second half of the year.
The crisis is caused not only by management but also by former and present Czech Governments, according to the OS KOVO President Jan Uhlir. He requires a number of steps to be taken by the government in order to solve the crisis.
The participants of the meeting decided to send an official complaint to the ILO in Geneva, outlining the increasing number of cases where wages have not been paid at agreed dates and in decent amounts.
