Precarious workers exposed to higher health and safety risks

2 octubre, 2014Three of the four workers killed last week at a mine in Indonesia partially owned by Rio Tinto were precarious workers. Next Tuesday, on 07 October, IndustriALL affiliates at Rio Tinto will join the global Campaign to “STOP Precarious Work” to demand that Rio Tinto respects workers’ rights, provides a safe workplace and stops undermining jobs through the use of precarious work.

Warning strikes at BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto mine in Chile

25 septiembre, 2014Workers at the Escondida mine and its port, Coloso, in Chile, went on strike at 8am on 22 September after members of Union Number 1 voted to stop work in response to the constant violations of Chilean law by the mine’s multinational owners, BHP Billiton and Río Tinto and the Chilean authorities’ failure to make the companies comply with the country’s legislation.

Swaziland bans trade unions

17 octubre, 2014Swazi Minister of Labour and Social Security, Winnie Magagula, has announced a Cabinet resolution deciding that, pending legal reforms, all federations should stop operating immediately. All trade union and employer federations will be effectively banned, a clear violation of ILO Convention 87, ratified by Swaziland, guaranteeing freedom of association for workers and employers.
