Signing on for workers' rights

12 December, 202356 brands have so far signed the new International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry, taking responsibility for workers’ rights in their supply chains. North American brands are conspicuously lacking from the list of signatories, which to date includes brands like H&M, Inditex (Zara), PVH, C&A and Otto Group.

Tesla conflict in Sweden escalates

9 November, 2023As electric car manufacturer Tesla refused to engage in negotiations on a collective agreement, Swedish union IF Metall realised it’s strike warnings on 27 October. With opposition to Tesla’s anti-union attitude growing, other Swedish unions are taking solidarity action to protect the right to collective bargaining. Unions in Norway are set to join the protest.

Employers attack the right to strike

6 November, 2023IndustriALL, together with the ITUC and other global unions, are strongly pushing back against the proposal from the employers’ group ahead of the International Labour Conference in June to include a standard-setting item on the right to strike on the agenda.

UAW reaches tentative agreement with all of the Big Three

30 October, 2023IndustriALL affiliate United Auto Workers Union (UAW) have halted strikes at Ford, Stellantis and General Motors plants after reaching tentative agreements on record contracts in a strike that started on 15 September.

US brands must sign binding agreements to protect workers

19 October, 2023IndustriALL is working with affiliates and allies to promote supply chain industrial relations centred on workers’ rights and legally binding agreements with global brands and retailers. This contrasts with the prevailing voluntary, private auditing model which has not been protective of workers’ rights and has brought risk to companies and investors alike.

GM India workers fight for job protection

5 October, 2023General Motors Employees Union in India, affiliated to IndustriALL through Shramik Ekta Mahasangh, launched an indefinite demonstration on 2 October, demanding that the workforce of General Motors’ Talegaon plant be absorbed by Hyundai Motors India as the plant is sold.
