Precarious workers exposed to higher health and safety risks

2 October, 2014Three of the four workers killed last week at a mine in Indonesia partially owned by Rio Tinto were precarious workers. Next Tuesday, on 07 October, IndustriALL affiliates at Rio Tinto will join the global Campaign to “STOP Precarious Work” to demand that Rio Tinto respects workers’ rights, provides a safe workplace and stops undermining jobs through the use of precarious work.

Warning strikes at BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto mine in Chile

25 September, 2014Workers at the Escondida mine and its port, Coloso, in Chile, went on strike at 8am on 22 September after members of Union Number 1 voted to stop work in response to the constant violations of Chilean law by the mine’s multinational owners, BHP Billiton and Río Tinto and the Chilean authorities’ failure to make the companies comply with the country’s legislation.

GUINEA Rio Tinto actions

14 October, 2014IndustriALL affiliate, the Union Syndicale des Travailleurs de Guinée (USTG), had planned to organize a carnival and seminar to mark the Rio Tinto day of action. They also planned to distribute the global flyer. However as a result of the ebola crisis, workers and union officials were sent home and no action could be organized.
