Yazaki plant closure in Bahia, Brazil will make 1,200 workers redundant

15 July, 2014The Japanese auto parts company Yazaki plans to close its factory in Feira de Santana, Bahia, at the end of July. The Feira de Santana Metalworkers’ Union, together with CNM/CUT, both affiliated to IndustriALL Global Union, are campaigning to halt the closure and save the jobs of the factory’s 1,200 workers.

FUP Women’s Network at Petrobras meets in Salvador

2 May, 2014The Brazilian oil workers’ union FUP has a women’s network and collective at Petrobras. On 25 – 27 April they met for the second time in Salvador. The meeting was held against the background of right wing attacks against the national oil company Petrobras, attacks which are multiplying in the election year. The conference was attended by around 60 women.

Historic victory for CUT metalworkers in Brazil

23 April, 2014The CNM/CUT, an affiliate of IndustriALL Global Union, has signed a unique agreement on profit sharing with ThyssenKrupp Elevadores. The company will pay a profit sharing bonus to 2,000 members of 27 metalworkers’ unions affiliated to the CUT in nine states. This is the first such national company agreement to apply only to members of unions affiliated to the same Brazilian trade union central.

Brazilian workers call for more rights and greater equality

14 April, 201440,000 workers from different sectors of the economy took to the streets of Sao Paulo on 9 April to demonstrate and press the government and the national congress to negotiate the labour movement’s agenda. Unions affiliated to different trade union centrals jointly organised the march.
