IndustriALL condemns Ghana Gold Fields retrenchments

19 April, 2018During a recent mission to Ghana, IndustriALL Global Union called for dialogue with Ghana Gold Fields to reverse the decision to retrench 2,150 workers at Tarkwa mine and give notice to a further 340 workers at Damang Mine. 

Iraqi electricity workers win inclusion for 150,000 precarious workers

18 May, 2018Recent strike action by 30,000 Iraqi electricity workers employed on precarious contracts has lead the government to concede and provide 150,000 public workers from all sectors with the same pension and social security rights as permanent workers.

Exxon bars workers from joining shareholders’ meeting

1 June, 2018Members of IndustriALL Australian affiliate AMWU travelled to Dallas, Texas in the US, to attend ExxonMobil’s annual shareholders’ meeting on 30 May to raise concerns over the long-running conflict at the company’s subsidiary Esso Australia. However, once there the four workers were denied entry despite having the necessary documents.  

Workers in Algeria to stage further strikes

2 April, 2019***UPDATE 3 APRIL 2019*** Workers in Algeria still plan to hold a three-day general strike starting 7 April unless a transitional government is put in place. Although President Bouteflika’s resignation is a victory for protestors, IndustriALL’s affiliate, SNATEG, is demanding a transitional government, which includes members of the opposition, in order to prepare for transparent presidential elections. SNATEG is also calling for the resignation of interim president and leader of the Senate, Abdelkader Bensalah. “The Algerian people do not have confidence in the present government installed by Bouteflika,” says SNATEG president, Raouf Mellal.

Malawi energy utility suspends 14 striking workers over wage dispute

14 December, 2023On 7 December over a thousand workers marched and staged a sit-in at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) operations in the cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu to protest a pittance wage offer.
