United congress elects leaders and looks for consensus on regional representation

19 June, 2012The newly born IndustriALL Global Union elects its leadership and tries to reach consensus on regional representation on its executive body.

On 19 June 2012 at its Founding Congress over 1,000 delegates representing 354 unions in 109 countries elected the senior leadership positions in the brand new IndustriALL Global Union.

The Congress elected Berthold Huber as President of IndustriALL. Senzeni Zokwana, Tom Buffenbarger and Hisanobu Shimada were elected as Vice Presidents. Jyrki Raina became General Secretary of IndustriALL, with three Assistant General Secretaries; Monika Kemperle, Fernando Lopes and Kemal Özkan.

A debate took place when the proposed list of Executive Committee members was submitted for vote. The proposal includes 60 seats for the Executive body, divided among the regions (Asia-Pacific - 12 seats; Latin America - 6 seats; Middle East and North Africa - 2 seats; North America - 9 seats; Sub-Saharan Africa - 6 seats; and, Europe - 25 seats).

The Congress continues tomorrow and will look for a consensus on regional representation.
