Mexican metalworkers<br>need organising

Read this article in:

22 June, 1999Mexico is one of the major centers for metal industry in the world.

An International Metalworkers' Federation project for Mexico has been launched with an extensive study of the metal industry in that country. There are an estimated one million plus metalworkers in Mexico, of whom only a small percentage are organised in trade unions.
In the first phase of this project, the IMF has requested the University of Puebla to carry out an extensive survey of the entire Mexican metal industry. Among other things, it will produce data on:
- the metal industry's general structure,
- analysis of the industry by sectors,
- geographical distribution of production,
- where products are marketed,
- which are the leading companies, and are they national or transnational,
- the workforce and a breakdown by gender and industry,
- working conditions and wages,
- unions.
It is expected that this particular research will be completed this autumn.
