GENEVA: IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi made clear his concern with regard to the situation in Yugoslavia in this year's May Day message. He states that "the solution to the problem, if conditions for a stable peace are to be established, is with the total integration of the Balkans into the European Union." The ethnic cleansing and the bombing had to stop, and a peaceful solution had to be worked out by the United Nations so that the victims could return to their homes in security. The international trade union movement must continue to support those who have been fighting for democracy and freedom within Yugoslavia ever since the dictatorship was installed. Malentacchi added that "it is particularly important that this May Day be devoted to the fight for human and trade union rights all over the world, and especially to those hundreds of thousands of refugees who have lost everything they have in this terrible human tragedy, which will remain for a very long time in our minds."
