7 March, 2012More than 100 million workers participated in the historic all India general strike on February 28, 2012. The strike was called by trade union centres in India, demanding urgent intervention to control prices, employment creation, strict enforcement of labour laws, equal pay for equal work, universal social security cover for unorganised sector workers and immediate ratification of the ILO Conventions 87 and 98.

22 March, 2012Six Zimbabwean activists were found guilty of charges of inciting public violence on March 19, causing uproar among labour and civil society organizations. Regional and international calls for the charges to be dropped swiftly shifted focus to put pressure on key government officials through a sms campaign to ensure that the lightest possible sentence would be handed down.

7 March, 2012In October 2011 miners and metalworkers at ArcelorMittal Temirtau (Kazakhstan) demanded a 30 per cent wage increase. Their demands are still not met. On February 25 the workers held a conference and decided to hold a rally on March 10. They will also push for the changes in Kazakhstan laws, which prohibit strikes at plants with continuous working cycle.

28 February, 2012On February 4, a big explosion at the NUH Industrial Path within the Tuzla Shipbuilding Zone disturbed the daily routine of around 10,000 workers. The explosion took place in the shipyard MENGI YAY YATCILIK producing luxury yachts.
28 November, 201162 workers at a Turkish subsidiary of German-owned GEA have been locked out since July. An international delegation of some 60 representatives from 20 countries visited the plant and called on the company to reinstate the workers immediately.
25 November, 2011The month long strike by members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) at Xstrata smelters in Rustenburg ended on November 25 with an agreement that a joint task team would investigate wage disparities and address these with immediate effect once the investigation is complete.
