Jathika Sewaka Sangamaya Metalworkers' Federation (JSSMF)On September 24, the JSSMF conducted a press conference at Nippon Hotel in Colombo on explained to the press representatives about Precarious Work Campaign and Decent Work Campaign. The union also explained its Living Wage Campaign to the media.On September 26, the JSSMF held a program on training trainers to brush up their knowledge on how to conduct awareness programs to workers on living wage. A component on precarious work was included in the program.On October 4, the scheduled finals of the six-a-side cricket and softball tournament among EPZ workers had to be postponed due to bad weather. This tournament is held to promote organizing. Instead, on October 8, finals were held at the Katunayake FTZ ground. Altogether 30 teams participated in the tournament.A campaign meeting was held at Biygama FTZ premises on October 11. IMF South Asian Office Regional Director Bro. Sudharshan Rao Sarde was the main speaker.

SRI LANKA

To support IMF's global efforts the Committee of Metal Industry Unions (CMIU) in Hong Kong made the following actions: •·        Put posters on boards and dispatched some leaflets to members.•·        On Oct 7, when the &quot;Minimum Wage Bill&quot; was submitted to the Legislative Council, CMIU gathered in front of the Legislative Council Building to take a petition.  For the &quot;Minimum Wage Bill&quot; suggested the wage calculating only on hourly rate, the unions believe this will lead more precarious work.  So, the unions made the action to warn the Government and the Councilors.  CMIU participated in the action carry posters with the slogans &quot;Minimum Wage Legislation! We Support!&quot; and &quot;Precarious Work! We Oppose!&quot;

HONG KONG

BANGLADESH: Md. Jahangir Alam, a shipbreaking worker who had migrated from the poverty stricken Rangpur district to work at the Habib steel shipbreaking yard in Chittagong, Bangladesh, died as a result of an accident at work on October 12, 2009. He was the seventh Bangladeshi shipbreaking worker to die in one week.On October 11, three other shipbreaking workers at the Pakija shipyard died from inhaling poisonous gases. On October 8, three other workers were smashed to death by an iron-plate at the Crystal shipyard.&quot;The labour law is being blatantly violated and the police have recorded these incidents as un-natural deaths,&quot; reports Mojibur Rahman Bhuiyan, General Secretary of IMF affiliate the Bangladesh Metalworkers' League.At a meeting between Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SKOP), an organization of workers and employees' organizations, and the Bangladesh State Labour Minister, on October 15, Bhuiyan demanded that the Minister investigate and punish the companies responsible for the deaths.&quot;This is murder by shipyard owners and we demand exemplary punishment. We can not allow this to happen anymore. No one can take advantage of poverty and unemployment. The government has a responsibility to create decent jobs,&quot; Bhuiyan said to the Minister.BML also demanded a mechanism for inspecting the ships before their entrance into the Bangladeshi territory, and that the rights of labour are protected. The union also appealed for international solidarity to &quot;stop these barbaric killings&quot;.The IMF sent a letter to the Bangladeshi State Labour Minister in support of the shipbreaking workers, calling for immediate action to respect the rights and improve the health, safety and welfare of shipbreaking workers in Bangladesh. CANADA:  The delegates of IMF affiliated International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) from the U.S. and Canada met recently in Vancouver to discuss how communications will develop in the future. The delegates, including local and district communicators, educators and web stewards, spoke about the ways their union could manage to get on the forefront of 21st century communications.The speakers at the forum were IAM general vice president Rich Michalski as Chairperson of the Conference, IAM's Canadian general vice president Dave Ritchie, IAM general secretary-treasurer Warren Mart, and former Senator Hillary Clinton's Chief of Staff Tamera Luzzatto. One of the most important events at the forum was the launch of a newly designed IAM website <a href="http://www.goiam.org/">http://www.goiam.org/</a>. The developers made the site more user-friendly and added new features including the possibility for visitors to leave their comments, rank and share stories. Interactive video is another innovation on the site. The IAMAW turned its electronic newsletter iMail into a blog. In addition, the site is updated with a new search system allowing the search by keywords known as 'tags'.Staying on the forefront of new communication technologies the IAM launched its official <a href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/International-Association-of-Machinists-Aerospace-Workers-IAMAW/75198195635?ref=nf">Facebook</a> and Twitter pages <a href="http://www.twitter.com/machinistsunion">www.twitter.com/machinistsunion</a>. The IAM event proceeds the IMF-EMF Communicators' Forum, which is scheduled for November 17-18 and will be hosted by German IMF affiliate IG Metall in Frankfurt. International Machinists discuss communications for the 21st century

GLOBAL: Metalworkers around the world are participating in the World Day for Decent Work today calling for an end to precarious employment and joining the International Trade Union Confederation in its call for getting the world to work.In the continuing fallout from the global financial crisis, millions of workers in precarious employment have lost their jobs. For employers, cutting temporary and agency jobs has proven to be a cheap and easy way of reducing their workforce. But for workers it has resulted in hardship, uncertainty and a complete lack of control over their working lives.As economies begin to recover, there is a real risk that companies will increase their dependence on temporary jobs, replacing jobs that were once permanent with precarious jobs. The importance of employment in the recovery is the subject of a new ITUC report released on this World Day for Decent Work. <a href="http://www.ituc-csi.org/IMG/pdf/Finacial_crisis_EN-final.pdf" target="_blank">Jobs - The Path to Recovery, How employment is central to ending the global crisis</a> describes how in response to the global economic crisis, the worst since the Great Depression with tens of millions of jobs disappearing, the economy must be built on social justice and environmental sustainability, respect for internationally-recognised workers' rights, effective financial regulation and global governance which puts people first.Global unions, including the International Metalworkers' Federation, have been calling on governments to focus on jobs in response to the crisis. At the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh last month global unions warned that the full ripple effect of the year-old crisis is only now being felt as tens of millions of jobs are cut, with a forecast of more job losses to occur in 2010 and 2011.The G20 Leaders' Statement, available on the IMF website <a href="../index.cfm?c=20830&amp;l=2" target="_blank">here</a>, offers some positive prospects for workers, but regrettably begins with the self-congratulatory assumption that the worst is over and recovery is in sight. The ITUC/TUAC evaluation of the 3rd G20 Summit indicates that the results of the Summit &quot;represented some advance on the outcome of the April Summit in London but also demonstrated a degree of complacency and progress was slow in some crucial areas&quot;. International Metalworkers' Federation joins global unions in call for secure employment as the essential response to the global economic crisis on this World Day for Decent Work.

Secure jobs are the answer to crisis

SIERDas Zentralkomitee der SIER beabsichtigt, eine öffentliche Sondersitzung über die globale Aktion gegen prekäre Beschäftigung durchzuführen und alle Medien einzuladen. Zudem wird die SIER eine Sonderausgabe ihres Info-Magazins herausgeben. Auf der Titelseite wird das Logo der Kampagne gegen prekäre Beschäftigung abgedruckt.Weiterhin ist vorgesehen, am 1. und 2. Oktober mit der neuen Führung der GSM Nezavisnost ein gemeinsames Seminar durchzuführen, das sich u.a. mit der Frage der prekären Beschäftigung befasst.

MAZEDONIEN

&#160;Am 7. Oktober wird es in den Unternehmen Zusammenkünfte und an öffentlichen Plätzen Mahnwachen geben. Dank der Initiative der IMB-Mitgliedsorganisationen wird die FNPR (Russlands größte nationale Zentrale) zusätzlich zu den Slogans der Globalen Kampagne für menschenwürdige Arbeit auch Slogans gegen prekäre Beschäftigung einsetzen. Die Massenmedien sind dazu eingeladen, über die Kundgebung der russischen Gewerkschaften zu berichten.Das IMB-Regionalbüro hat zusammen mit der IUF, der VKT, der School of Workers' Democracy und dem Center of Social and Labour Rights einen Ausschuss eingerichtet, um  Ende November eine GUS-Konferenz über prekäre Arbeit und Erfahrungen bei deren Bekämpfung durchzuführen.
