INDIA: Permanent and temporary workers remain united at the Bosch and Brembo plants in Pune, India, after 66 days of being on strike and despite pressure tactics from management and employers in the region.The workers went on strike on July 18 demanding the implementation of pay rises stipulated in the 2007 collective bargaining agreement. Significantly the workers' demands also include equal pay for equal work with precariously employed workers, trainees and permanent workers in unity in the fight, which is being lead by the Bosch Chassis Systems Kamgar Sanghatana (Employees Union) and supported by IMF affiliates and independent unions in the region. Prominent social workers are also supporting the strikeIn recent days management at the two companies proposed a settlement, subject to the condition that not a single contract worker or trainee will be taken back. The union did not accept the proposal and stated that all contract workers (131) and trainees (43) should be taken back in three batches with improved wages and conditions of employment.The management is holding talks with the union in the presence of the commissioner of Labour and has threatened to close down its operations in Pune if the union fails to accept its proposal on contract workers. Various petitions by management to the industrial courts to deem the strike illegal have been denied. Meanwhile the union is continuing to pursue legal measures to prevent the use of strike breaking labour at the two plants.&quot;The companies in the region are employing all kinds of pressure tactics to ensure that the strike fails, as it will break down the morale of contract workers not only in Bosch &amp; Brembo, but the whole industrial area,&quot; explained IMF regional representative Sudharshan Roa Sarde, adding, &quot;As such, all unions are collectively doing their best and coordinating efforts to sustain the strike&quot;.   IMF and its affiliates organized in Bosch in Germany and Brembo in Italy are offering solidarity support to the workers.From October 3 to 10, IMF affiliates around the world are taking the fight to governments, calling on them to ensure equal rights for precarious workers and to strengthen legislation to prevent employers from using precarious employment in place of permanent and direct employment.

CANADA:  More than 5,000 members of the United Steelworkers went on strike on July 13 in defense of theirs jobs and conditions achieved over 20 years at Vale Inco, the Canadian operations of Brazilian multinational Vale.The workers went on strike after the company would only accept to renew the collective agreement if the workers represented by USW agreed to a drastic reduction in conditions and increased job insecurity. Despite having made US$13.2 billion profit last year, and currently with US$22 billion in cash assets on hand, Vale's final offer insisted on creating a two-tiered pension plan, slashing the nickel bonus and seriously damaging seniority rights.The members belonging to USW locals in Sudbury, Port Colborne and Voisey's Bay have created a campaign website at <a href="http://www.FairDealNOW.ca">www.FairDealNOW.ca</a> where details and updates about the dispute are available. In a letter to the community published on their website the striking USW members write, &quot;Vale, the new owner who currently is a massively profitable multinational from Brazil, has chosen to use the current economic conditions as simply an excuse to extract deep long-term cuts with little regard for maintaining the family incomes that sustain our communities.&quot;The IMF, affiliates CNM-CUT and USW, and other unions present in Vale are continuing to work together in support of the striking USW members and urge you to also show solidarity by sending letters of support to the workers in Canada. 1. CGT-FO CGT FO will be holding an International Conference on the 7 October 2009 as part of their National Confederation Committee, which will focus on discussions with foreign unionists about the Economic crisis and International Union Action.   On the 7 October FO will also be preparing for their National Conference that meets end of October. The goal of this conference is to coordinate and reinforce union intervention for the defence of employee rights in the face of the economic crisis. 2.  On 7 October as part of a joint strategy five French IMF affiliates CFDT, &quot;Force Ouvrière&quot; de la Métallurgie - FO, FGMM-CFDT, CGT, CFTC and CFE-CGC, together with FSU, Solidaires and UNSA are going to hold in common meetings, rallies, gatherings and press conferences, industrial actions, debates and meetings with union officials all over France.

Oktober der Welttag für menschenwürdige Arbeit ist, wird unser Dachverband an diesem Tag etwas organisieren. Die Metallgewerkschaft wird zudem die globale Kampagne des IMB vorstellen.

Mexico: Grupo Mexico has decided to close the Cananea mine because of the strike that began on 30 July 2007. The courts have declared the strike to be legal.Grupo Mexico issued a statement announcing the closure of the mine. It said that the nine-month-old strike has led &quot;the company to close the mine and pay off employees in accordance with the law&quot;.The miners&#039; union believes the announcement is purely tactical. The union&#039;s secretary for Political Affairs, Carlos Pavón, said the announcement of the closure of the company Mexicana de Cananea and the offer to pay off the workforce was &quot;tactical&quot;. He added that: &quot;we all know the strike is legal, so they can&#039;t do a thing. They&#039;re only trying to frighten the workers&quot;.He explained that the company is not legally allowed to close unilaterally because a collective employment contract is in force. The company would have to ask the Conciliation and Arbitration Tribunal for permission to close the mine.The union spokesperson said that the workers remain calm and are aware of what is happening. He said that Grupo Mexico &quot;had expected the courts would accept its appeal against the legality of the strike, but things did not turn out as it expected and it is now clutching at straws&quot;.Approximately 1,300 unionised workers are employed at Mexicana de Cananea, which is considered to be one of the biggest mines in the world.

Carlos Pavón, spokesperson for the miners' union, said that Grupo Mexico cannot close the mine because a collective agreement is in force. He said that the company is only trying to frighten the workers.
