It is truly the start of a new era for the people of Mexico: Andrés Manuel López Obrador was recently elected president, bringing hopes of democracy, gender equality, youth inclusion and the end of poverty and corruption.It is also the first time a Mexican cabinet has achieved gender parity, with eight men and eight women of varying ages. Luisa María Alcalde is the perfect illustration of this new era. The 31-year-old is ready to head up one of the key ministries in the fight to protect workers’ rights – the ministry of labour and social welfare.

South African women’s council pickets against sexual harassment at UNISA

Expanded maternity leave becomes law in the Philippines

26 February, 2019After more than six years of intense campaigning and lobbying by IndustriALL affiliated unions, women workers’ in the Philippines will now benefit from increased paid maternity leave, as a new law comes into force.

South Africa: Union demands justice for woman worker murdered at electricity sub-station

28 June, 2018In May last year, power utility Eskom worker, 29-year-old Thembisile Yende, was murdered whilst at work at an electricity sub-station in Ekurhuleni near Johannesburg. On 28 June, the court said that the director of public prosecutions has provisionally withdrawn the charges against her alleged killer, David Ngwenya, a technician at Eskom.

Fighting for fair pay: South Asian unionists trained by IndustriALL

30 June, 2025On 25–26 June, IndustriALL Global Union held a training workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal, for its South Asian affiliates, focused on the pay equity modules launched earlier this year. More than 20 unionists participated in the event, which aimed to strengthen the capacity of unions’ wage bargaining teams and the women’s committee members to address issues related to pay equity and the value of work. The workshop was part of a series of regional training courses for affiliates on pay equity funded by the FES

We are all in for equality: women’s power at the heart of IndustriALL’s global movement
