20 June, 2012Affiliates of IndustriALL Global Union today resolved to work together to stop precarious work.

The resolution, unanimously adopted during the second day of the Founding Congress, was jointly submitted by F. Garteks SBSI, Indonesia, the National Garment Workers’ Federation of Bangladesh, and the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union.

Addressing the Congress Elly Rosita Silaban, President of Garteks said, “The situation of precarious workers is far from decent. Short-term contracts of only three to six months are used in Indonesia, including in the supply chains of multinational companies like adidas and Nike. These workers have lower wages, less social protection, no benefits and are excluded from the protection of labour law.”

Precarious work is on the rise across all sectors of IndustriALL replacing permanent, direct jobs with insecure jobs that have no future. Millions of workers in precarious jobs are excluded from the protection of labour laws, from social security and from pension schemes, and live under the constant threat of unemployment.

IndustriALL affiliates resolved to support a global campaign to STOP Precarious Work, which draws upon existing campaigns led by ITGLWF, ICEM and IMF with the aim of promoting equal treatment for precarious workers.

Affiliates will organize precarious workers and contribute to enforcing their right to join a union, and will support IndustriALL’s work with other Global Union Federations to campaign globally against precarious work.

IndustriALL affiliates will mobilizing their members on 7 October, the World Day for Decent Work, in the global campaign to STOP Precarious Work.
