IndustriALL Fiat/Chrysler Network Meeting

28 March, 2013The Fiat/Chrysler Network Meeting resolved to hold a day of action in the week of 8 to 12 April, to inform workers in all Fiat/Chrysler plants on the Network’s demands for international recognition, information and consultation by the company.

The 3rd Fiat/Chrysler Network Meeting, organized by IndustriALL Global Union, gathered the representative trade unions affiliated to IndustriALL with members employed in the different facilities of Fiat Spa, Fiat Industrial and Chrysler worldwide. The network is growing and more than 80 representatives from 12 countries participating in the meeting this year.

Participants at the meeting called for an agreement through which Fiat management recognizes the global union network as a forum of information and consultation, as is the case for many other European and America companies where positive results have been achieved through collaboration with trade unions at this level.

Other key points discussed at the meeting were on the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) production system implemented by Fiat and country reports on the situation in the facilities of the group.

Unions at the meeting broadly accepted that the implementation of the WCM production system is necessary to ensure competitiveness, however they also believe that the active participation of workers to promote competitiveness of the company requires a guarantee of job security.

Any productivity increases should also be accompanied by improvement in work conditions and a fair participation in the company’s results, including wages, so as so maintain competitiveness and jobs over time.

The unions reiterated that the company can only acquire lasting success if it is run together with its employees and not against them. Establishing an international forum for information and consultation would enable this.

The meeting resolved to continue the work of the network next year and to expand its reach to other countries and production sites with the goal of unifying workers at all the Fiat plants around the world and strengthening the unionization process.

The Network demands that Fiat/Chrysler guarantee trade union and labour rights, without any form of discrimination, as established by ILO Conventions, starting from the rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining. The Network also committed itself to ensuring that these rights are extended to all workers employed in the Fiat Group supply chain.
