New era for trade unions

22 June, 1999Unions representing over 2.1 million members became affiliates today, June 23, of the International Metalworkers' Federation.

HELSINKI: Most of the new affiliates to become members of the IMF at its Central Committee meeting in Helsinki, June 23-24, come from unions in the former Soviet Union. They alone represent two million metalworkers. "A new era is beginning, not only for the International Metalworkers´ Federation but also for the trade union movement worldwide," said IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi in a comment.
The new IMF affiliates are:
Belgium: Syndicat des Employés, Techniciens et Cadres de Belgique;
Belarus: Belarus Automobile & Farm Machinery Workers' Union;
Belarus: Radio & Electronics Industry Workers' Union of Belarus;
Finland: Insinööriliitto (Union of Professional Engineers of Finland);
Moldavia: Association républicaine des syndicats des travailleurs de l'industrie de radio et eléctronique;
Russia: Iron, Steel & Miners Workers' Union of Russia;
Sweden: Civilingenjörsförbundet (Union of Engineers);
Ukraine: Automobile and Farm Machine-Building Workers' Union of Ukraine;
Ukraine: Central Committee of Ukrainian Radio-Electronic Workers' Trade Unions;
Ukraine: Central Council of Trade Unions of Defence Industry Workers of Ukraine.
