Government and employers must ensure safe mining in Pakistan

1 September, 2022Pakistan’s mining industry is riddled with workplace safety violations and occupational disease. Exposure to coal dust leads to various health issues, including serious lung and heart ailments and spinal injuries. Add to that the dangers of methane gas poisoning, suffocation, underground explosions, or mine walls collapsing, leading to numerous fatalities every year.

Workplace safety still a major concern in Pakistani mines

12 July, 2022According to IndustriALL affiliates in Pakistan, as of 7 July, there had been around 60 accidents in the country’s mines, killing more than 90 workers and severely injuring around 40. Workers are killed by underground explosions, methane gas poisoning, suffocation or mine walls collapsing due to lax safety procedures and the unavailability of the first line of treatment at mining sites.

South African unions end three-month strike in the gold sector

15 June, 2022The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) jointly signed a collective agreement at Sibanye Stillwater on 11 June. The agreement comes after a three-month strike and concludes negotiations in the gold sector that began last year.

23 May, 2022More workers have lost their lives in Pakistan’s deadly coal mines. According to IndustriALL affiliate PCMLF, in May alone, 18 miners have been killed at work.

Rescue efforts for miners trapped underground for 33 days in Burkina Faso continue

20 May, 2022IndustriALL affiliate, Federation des Travailleurs de la Metallurgie, De L’Or, de la Filature et du Textile, fears for the worst as there has be no contact with the eight trapped mineworkers at Perkoa Zinc mine for 32 days. Contact with the miners was lost when the Zinc mine was flooded on 16 April after heavy rains, trapping the miners 500 meters underground.
